I am Erin and I run supervisual.png, a new graphic design and poetry project that I had been envisioning for a while and that I’ve brought to life for Auckland Zinefest 2021. supervisual.png is interested in lots of different things – neon aesthetics, gender discourse, academic literature, overemotion, Auckland’s maunga and rain, postmodern hellscapes, existential grief and hope, ambient music, and storytelling. It’s largely informed by my experiences as a mentally ill queer person who creates things out of cathartic necessity.
This is my first experience making zines! I’ve been writing poetry and playing around with graphic design for a long time, but I’ve never shared any work in zine format, so this will be a new challenge for me. My process for image creation is largely digital. Words either come from poems I’ve written on scraps of paper or entries in my Notes app. These are paired with free stock imagery and/or my own photos as well as open-source fonts and free photo-editing software effects until I come up with something I’m happy with.
An FYI for trans folks – I’ll be selling a trans history zine at Zinefest that’s free if you’re trans!
