The Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatāpui-Wāhine o Aotearoa
Saturday 5 August
We are excited to be back for 2023! This year we will again produce two special edition zines. Our first will be issue 2 of “Vintage Spectrum” our zine of herstory. It will include personal writing and articles from the museum’s collection of vintage lesbian sapphic and feminist magazines and newsletters produced in Aotearoa before 2000.
And our second zine is a complement to our current exhibition and will be telling the stories of lesbian sapphic places in the K’Rd precinct. Our exhibit “View of Our Street” features photos by Melanie Church is celebrating lesbian sapphic spaces that were near the museum’s new premises in the K’Rd precinct, welcoming us into our new place.
Zine publishing, as the independent, simple and cheap alternative to mainstream publishing controlled by corporations mirrors the story of our vintage publications created by collectives or small groups of women in response to the dearth of representation in mainstream media, who censor, ignore and negatively represent marginalised communities such as ours. These vintage publications wrote about topics, events and issues from the perspective of lesbian sapphic women that were important to our diverse lesbian communities and were a way for our communities to be connect.
