Max Coombes
I am a comic artist, photographer, and writer based in Tāmaki Makaurau. I produce works about time and memory in the New Zealand landscape, and am interested in the way that spaces activate memories and vice versa. My comics are all written as surreal adventure hangouts, so characters walk or drive around chatting to one another, but I follow the ‘show, don’t tell’ principle of storytelling so that actions unfold wordlessly across the page. This coupled with a minimalistic visual style makes for a reading experience at once serene and atmospheric, humorous and tense.
